MEAPA's Toolbox: Action Steps

Stop Saying How Busy You Are

Yes you are very busy.  Congratulations on being so busy.   Are you productive though?  Are you able to finish anything or do you find yourself just going in circles?  And exactly why are you telling people how busy you are?  Do you assume they have the time to listen to you talk about how busy you are?  Does it make you feel superior to others when you tell them how busy you are?

Remember that everyone else is just as busy as you.  This might be hard for you to understand but it is true.  Stop saying how busy you are and just get to work on whatever task requires your time and energy at the moment.   Complete that task and then move on to the next one without the need to be noticed.

Learning how to stop saying how busy you are is a critical task to consider as you look to think more effectively, take action and grow both personally and professionally.   Telling people how busy you are seldom does anyone any good.  If you say how busy you are enough it can even have detrimental effects on your own performance.

For this action step, consider listening to your conversations today.  During each conversation, be aware of when you want to tell someone how busy you are.  Just being aware will help you take notice of how frequently you tell people how busy you are.  Once you are aware, see if you can switch your thinking to an idea or a topic instead of how busy you are.  Get the person you are talking to become an active communication partner instead of just someone you need to complain to.
